OUT AND ABOUT WITHOUT YOUR OWN CAR: The North Coast

A short walk from downtown Fort Bragg

Janet and I went on another Northern California adventure this week, free from the obligation of car ownership. We rented a car from nearby Doherty’s Truck and Car Rental—a short AC Transit ride on the 72 bus. You can ride your bike there as well; they’ll safely keep your bike while you’re away. We then drove up the coast to Arcata and Redwood National Park, about a 5 hour drive from El Cerrito and the Richmond Annex. California’s coast is breathtaking—lonesome beaches, dramatic topography to the water’s edge, spectacular old-growth forests, and charming towns. In Arcata we saw signs enlisting the public to help plan for a multimodal transportation future—we’re not alone. — Steve Price
