OUT AND ABOUT WITHOUT YOUR CAR: Heading over to Headlands Brewing for happy hour

On a recent warm Friday evening, a few of us EC/RA Walk & Roll-ers hopped on our e-bikes for the 2-mile ride along the Ohlone Greenway to Headlands Brewing at the corner of Gilman Street and Ohlone Greenway in Berkeley. Headlands Brewing took over the space occupied by beloved Gilman Biergarten, which closed late last year after 10 years in business. Proprietor Austin Sharp, a North Berkeley resident, was inspired by Gilman Biergarten to open the first Headlands Brewing location in Lafayette in 2021 and expanded the operation to Berkeley a few months ago.

Headlands has maintained the biergarten’s bike-friendliness and even added more bike parking! There are two big racks inside the biergarten to keep bikes safe and nearby, and the racks were at capacity that night. It’s also a super kid-friendly place, with an upgraded play area for kiddos while moms and dads enjoy some local brews, as well as salads, sandwiches, and burgers. — Janet Byron
